Bulan, Sorsogon, December 28, 2009: With summer days ahead, it will certainly be a little more comfort especially in the pediatric and charity wards of the Bulan Municipal Hospital as ten units of electric fans were donated to and installed today at the facility.
Mayor Helen De Castro and the Executive Officers of the Liga ng mga Barangay, led by Kagawad Antonio Vytiaco and Kapitan Excel Zuniga, visited the hospital and brought along the units which were purchased out of a fund-raising activity during the Barangay Night held on May 31, 2009. A total of 14,888 pesos were collected during the Pantomina Dancing and this amount was good for ten fans.
Dr. Tita Fe Palad, Head of the Pawa Hospital, and the administrative staff, received the units.
This activity of the Liga ng mga Barangay, in joint cooperation with LGU Bulan was the first of its kind during the Barangay Night affair. The traditional Barangay Night is a culminating activity of the Bulan Town Fiesta, when all the barangay officials of the 63 barangays of Bulan, together with some of their barangay residents converge at the town plaza for a night of celebration. It was here that the idea to collect for some noble purpose was hatched by some local officials.
On account of this worthwhile endeavor, local and barangay officials are now planning a bigger and better fund-raising scheme during the pantomina dances next year.
In Bulan, especially in the southern coastal barangays, it has been a tradition that VIPs and visitors and prominent barangay residents are called to the center of the dance floor to dance the Bicolano folkdance Pantomina, and while they are dancing, people would come forward to drop certain amounts before the feet of the dancing pantomina couples. The amount collected becomes a fund to provide for some worthwhile project or activity in the community.
