Bulan, Sorsogon, October 9, 2009: The commanding officer of the Barangay San Isidro Alpha Coy 9IB Philippine Army Detachment, 1Lt. Alfie Lee, together with his Ex-O, 2Lt. Guy Ray Madrid, attended a meeting of the Liga ng Mga Barangay officials at the SB Session Hall on October 8, 2009 and appealed for cooperation in their civil-military efforts to bring and help maintain peace and order in this side of the region.
.In his discussion with the Punong Barangays, Lieutenant Lee stressed that it is expected of barangay officials to be faithful to their oaths of office and their allegiance to the government since they are part of it. He said that he has already developed a certain kind of rapport and friendship with the people of Bulan since he had been here for about already three years during his first assignment and tour of duty.
The anti-insurgency campaign which has been going on for over thirty years now cannot really be successful unless and until there is full cooperation on the part of the citizenry. He also discussed the government’s amnesty program extending benevolence and assistance to elements willing to come back to the fold of the law. He elaborated also on the unfortunate incidents that happened in Sorsogon, particularly in Pilar town, a week ago, where army soldiers encountered and killed nine communist rebel elements. He said that government didn’t want this to happen.
When asked about possible abuses by his men especially in far-flung barangays, he said that as a leader he will not tolerate it and there is due process within the military system to deal with this kind of issues. He readily gave out his personal number for the barangay leaders to contact in case the army men are needed.
Mayor Baby De Castro extended thanks to the Army here in Bulan for their efforts during calamities in helping local communities in distress, particularly during Storm Dante in May when Bulan experienced the worst flooding ever. She also expressed her appreciation that there is an opportunity like this dialogue now going on between the civilians and the military.
Bulan is one of the towns in Sorsogon where an army detachment is strategically based due to the insurgency problem still affecting the region.
