Bulan, Sorsogon, October 7, 2009: In line with the National Nutrition Program, the National Nutrition Council Regional Office V, in coordination with the Municipal Nutrition Council, conducted two rounds of Training of Barangay Implementers on the Promotion of Good Nutrition (PGN) on August 24-28 (First Batch) and September 14-18 (Second Batch) at the Sabang Pavilion. This training is a component activity of the Accelerated Hunger Mitigation Program (AHMP) of the National Nutrition Council and adopted by the Municipal Nutrition Council.
Eighteen barangays of Bulan were proposed as part of this advocacy program, the objectives of which are: increase number of breastfeeding among infants, and children given complementary food; improve calorie intake among family members; and sustain availability of vegetables/livestock through backyard gardening.
The First Batch of barangays who attended the August 24-28 training included Zone 2, Zone 6, Zone 7, Zone 8, San Ramon, Lajong, M. Roxas, Quezon, Namo; the Second Batch, Calomagon, San Francisco, Jamorawon, San Isidro, Otavi, Fabrica, Aquino, JP Laurel, San Vicente. Representing these barangays were the Barangay Nutrition Scholars, Barangay Health Workers, Mother Leaders, and Rural Health Midwives.
Meanwhile, on October 6, at the SB Session Hall, MNC Action Officer Mrs. Anilin Lolos conducted an orientation to the Liga ng mga Barangay on the previous trainings so that they can fully understand why support is needed for such programs by the elective community officials. Among those who were invited to attend from each of the proponent barangays were the Punong Barangay, the Kagawad-Chairman on Health and Nutrition, Kagawad-Chairman on Agriculture, and the SK Chairperson.
Among the topics discussed were the needed support for the program by the Sangguniang Barangay for IEC activities for Caregivers’ Classes, the need for print and non-print materials, the establishment of a Mother-Baby-Friendly community, organization of Breastfeeding Support Groups and Peer Breastfeeding Support Counselors.
The barangay officials pledged their full support to the program.
