With Education Secretary, Hon. Jesli Lapuz, and coach Mrs. Ruby L. Hernandez

Bulan, Sorsogon, November 16, 2009: Shaina Marie Obis Villareal, is a pretty, bright, nine-year old, who can emote, modulate and project her voice or mimic that of others, and she stood out as the best among the Philippines’ best in her age-bracket in the Department of Education’s Masining na Pagkukuwento (Read-a-thon in Filipino), Elementary School Level, on November 13, in Manila. No less than the Secretary of Education, Hon. Jesli Lapuz handed out the award to her for her feat.

And her coach, Teacher Mrs. Ruby Luzuriaga Hernandez, who herself was a champion orator and declamer during her younger years, shared the honor with Shaina.

It is an honor shared by everybody else in Bulan, and Mayor Helen C. De Castro made sure that banners of congratulation were unfurled to salute the young champion. Mayor De Castro extended all-out support to Shaina and her coach by providing a P5,000-allowance for their trip to Manila for the contest. She also promised another set of incentives should she make it, and she did.

The contest is an annual activity staged by the Department of Education and is open to all public elementary school pupils all over the country. The school chooses their district champion, who again competes in the division level and then to the regional level. All sixteen regional level champions are then pitted against each other in a national contest.

Shaina is a Grade 111- Section 1 pupil of Bulan North Central School-B of the Bulan North District. She is the only child of Mr. Edgardo Gerona Villareal and Maritess Obis Villareal.

Teachers and parents in Bulan, raring to see Shaina’s performance have requested her, through her coach Ruby, to perform her winning piece during the Bulan Teachers’ Day on December 11, 2009.
