Bulan, Sorsogon, November 23, 2009: Performing a profession and at the same time doing a civic duty in order to save a life made Mr. Herculano Tabuzo, Jr., someone to look up to, at least in the eyes of the Philippine National Police officials of this province. He was today awarded a Plaque of Recognition during the flag ceremony sponsored by the local PNP at the Municipal Building grounds.
Mr. Tabuzo, a local radio field reporter of 106.1 YFM/Padaba, together with his station manager, Shelly Ann Bajaro, quickly responded to make a radio coverage of the November 9 landmine ambush incident in Barangay Calomagon that took the lives of four policemen and another man believed to be a member of the NPA. Upon arrival at the scene, they found out that the area was still untouched, the dead bodies still on the ground. While documenting the incident, they also looked for possible survivors of the carnage. Here they found PO1 Baldano who suffered serious eye and leg injuries. He immediately called for help from the Barangay Tanods of Calomagon, had the injured cop immediately transported to town for proper medical attention. He also took hold of a cop’s armalite rifle and several magazines and ammunition.
When the responding Philippine Army and PNP units arrived, Tabuzo identified himself as a member of the Press, and when an Armyman tried to get from him the rifle he refused. He surrendered the object only after the soldier properly identified himself, his purpose being to have the arms given to the proper commanding officers of the casualties.
With the timely assistance of Mr. Tabuzo and his company, the policeman’s life was saved.
In his message before the PNP and the LGU employees, the Deputy Provincial Director of Sorsogon Province, representing Provincial Director Heriberto Olitoquit, lauded Mr. Tabuzo for his heroic performance that saved the life of a policeman. He said that it is his hope that civilians, being partners of the police in the preservation of peace and order can follow the example set by Mr. Tabuzo.
Also present during the simple ceremony was the Chief of Police of Bulan, Chief Inspector Efren E. Orlina, 509th PPMG Group Director Perfecto Lovenia, and Municipal Councilors Simmy Gerona, Jolife Dellomas, Dondon De Castro, and Tessie Guran. Municipal PIO Antonio G. Gilana spoke in behalf of Mayor Helen De Castro and similarly lauded Mr. Tabuzo for his heroism.
